Description
Deep red new leaves and long-lasting red-purple flowers make Spiraea Double Play Doozie an easy way to bring rich color to a front yard bed. The foliage matures through green while fresh red growth continues to appear around the flowers. Its rounded mound stays about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, fitting neatly along walkways, at the front of mixed beds, or in patio containers.
Flowers can continue from spring into fall, giving pollinators a long season of activity. Full sun creates the richest foliage and flower color, although partial shade is suitable. Water regularly while the roots establish, then allow the soil to dry briefly between soakings. A slow-release shrub fertilizer in early spring is enough; heavy feeding can make the growth loose.
Lightly trim after the first flower flush in late spring to refresh the red new growth. Every few years, remove a few older woody stems in early spring to keep the center productive. Softwood cuttings taken during active summer growth can be rooted in a moist, well-drained mix.
