Description
Common tansy forms an upright colony of strong stems topped from summer into autumn with dense, flat-topped clusters of bright yellow, button-like flower heads. Deeply divided green foliage gives the plant a fern-like texture and releases a powerful aromatic scent when crushed.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. It adapts to chalk, clay, loam, or sand, tolerates dry conditions once established, and supplies stems for cutting while its flowers support pollinators.
This rhizomatous perennial spreads vigorously by underground stems and abundant seed. Shear spent clusters before seed matures and contain the roots where spread is unwanted. Common tansy is toxic if eaten; wear gloves when handling the foliage, and check local restrictions before planting.
