Description
Cornus kousa var. chinensis Claudia is a small upright Chinese dogwood that matures about 13 to 26 feet tall and wide. In early summer, tight clusters of greenish flowers are framed by four broad, overlapping cream bracts that develop pink tinges as they age. Deep pink, strawberry-like fruit follows, and the ovate leaves turn red and orange in fall.
Grow Claudia in fertile, humus-rich, well-drained acidic or neutral soil in full sun or partial shade. Its bushy form suits cottage gardens, woodland plantings, and low-maintenance mixed borders. The fruit follows the species pattern and is technically edible, although it is commonly left for birds.
