Description
Echinacea purpurea ‘Merlot’ is an upright, clump-forming perennial selected for remarkably dark wine-red stems, dark green leaves and large rose-pink flower heads with prominent orange cones from midsummer into autumn.
Plant it in full sun in fertile, humus-rich yet freely drained soil, keeping the crown level with the soil surface. Water while establishing, then let the soil dry moderately between waterings and avoid prolonged winter wet.
The sturdy stems make excellent cut flowers, while nectar-rich blooms feed pollinators. Deadhead for a tidier display or leave late seed heads for birds and winter structure, then cut the old growth down before spring.
