Description
Ginkgo biloba grows into a tall architectural tree with an upright young crown that broadens irregularly with age. Fan-shaped green leaves turn clear yellow in fall, while gray bark remains visible after leaf drop.
Plant it as a specimen in a sunny urban or large garden setting. Established trees tolerate drought, heat, air pollution, and road salt. Female trees develop fleshy-coated seeds with a strong odor, while many named landscape cultivars are male and do not produce them.
Choose moist but well-drained soil and water regularly during establishment. Blend planting compost and grit into the planting hole. Do not add fertilizer at planting. Routine pruning is unnecessary, though damaged branches can be removed in late winter or early spring.
Seeds are harmful if eaten by people or pets, and the fleshy seed coat may cause contact dermatitis.
