Description
For broad year-round screening, Picea abies grows into a tall pyramidal conifer with upturned primary branches and drooping secondary branchlets. Dark green needles stay on the tree through every season, while long hanging cones mature brown in fall.
Give this large tree full sun and acidic, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Allow about 25 to 30 feet for its mature spread. Hot, dry summers and waterlogged ground reduce performance. The sharp-pointed needles can scratch skin, so wear gloves when handling branches.
