Description
Spiraea japonica Anthony Waterer is a compact, deciduous shrub with a broad, mounded outline. Its sharply toothed leaves emerge reddish purple, mature to blue-green, and may show irregular cream and pink variegation. Flat-topped clusters of small, deep rosy-pink to carmine-red flowers open from late spring through summer.
Plant it in full sun to light shade in moist but well-drained soil. It fits the front of a mixed shrub border or an informal flowering hedge, while the flowers provide nectar and pollen and attract butterflies. Prune in late winter or early spring if shaping is needed, and remove spent clusters to extend the display.
