Description
Magnolia loebneri Merrill develops into a vigorous deciduous tree with a rounded, spreading crown and broad green leaves. In early spring, before the foliage opens, abundant fragrant white flowers cover the branches. Each star-shaped bloom has many broad tepals, often with a soft pink blush near the base, and can reach about 4 inches across.
Choose a sheltered position in full sun or partial shade. This adaptable magnolia grows in clay, loam, or sandy soil when drainage is good and moisture remains steady. It accepts acidic, neutral, or alkaline conditions. Give the crown generous room, water during dry periods, and use mulch to conserve soil moisture. Keep pruning minimal and remove unwanted growth from midsummer into early autumn.
