Description
Pinus mugo var. pumilio forms a low, dense, broad evergreen mass for rock gardens and foundation beds. Dark green needles cover spreading branches whose tips turn upward, with small brown cones among the foliage.
Give this dwarf mountain pine full sun and well-drained soil. It accepts chalk, clay, loam, or sand when drainage is reliable, and established plants tolerate drought and dry soil. Avoid wet sites. Its slow, low-maintenance growth and deer resistance suit exposed, informal, and coastal garden plantings.
