Description
Stachys byzantina Silver Carpet is a vigorous evergreen perennial grown for a dense, spreading mat of soft gray-white foliage. Elliptic leaves up to about 10 cm long overlap into a low carpet, creating a strong textural accent without the flower spikes produced by typical lamb’s ear. Plants mature within about two to five years and spread 50 to 100 cm across, making this cultivar useful as ground cover or edging.
Plant in full sun on a south- or west-facing site with moderately fertile, well-drained chalk, loam, or sand. Protect the crown from excessive winter wet and keep new plantings watered during dry spells until the mat is established. Divide established growth or remove rooted sections in spring. Routine pruning is unnecessary; watch for slugs and powdery mildew, especially where drainage or air movement is poor.
