Description

Thymus citriodorus Doone Valley forms a low evergreen mat of tiny green leaves splashed with yellow or gold. Red buds open into lavender-pink flower heads in summer, attracting pollinators while the spreading stems cover sunny path edges and gravel beds.

Grow it in full sun in neutral to alkaline, sharply drained soil. Established plants tolerate drought but strongly dislike winter wet. Its lemon-scented leaves and flowers are edible, and the compact mat also fits rock gardens and containers. Divide plants in spring or take semi-hardwood cuttings in mid- to late summer.
