Description
Paeonia lactiflora ‘Karl Rosenfield’ forms a sturdy mound of divided dark-green foliage topped by large, bright crimson double flowers in late spring and early summer. The outer petals are broad and waved, while the crowded central petals curve inward and show finely notched tips. Mature plants reach about 2.5 to 3 feet tall and wide.
Grow this long-lived peony in a sheltered position with full sun or light afternoon shade and deep, fertile soil that stays moist but drains freely. Water regularly while a new crown establishes, then avoid disturbing it. Give the heavy flower heads discreet support if needed.
Remove faded blooms and cut the stems to the ground only after the foliage dies back in fall. Contact with damaged plant material may irritate pets’ skin, so keep pets away during cutting back or division.
