Description
Phlox subulata Emerald Cushion Blue spreads a low evergreen mat that becomes covered with lavender-blue to purple flowers. The narrow green leaves keep the planting dense between bloom periods. Its prostrate growth fits rock gardens, edging, open ground, and the edges of patio containers. Mature mats stay near 6 inches tall and spread to about 2 feet.
Grow it in full sun or light partial shade for dense flowering. Keep the soil well drained and only lightly moist after establishment. Apply a light compost top-dressing in spring only when growth is weak. Shear the mat lightly just after flowering in late spring to encourage fresh growth.
