Description
Anemone sylvestris is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial that spreads into leafy colonies. Long-stalked deeply divided green leaves form the ground layer, while upright stems carry fragrant, often nodding white cup-shaped flowers centred by golden stamens. Spent flowers develop distinctive woolly seed heads.
Grow it outdoors in partial shade or gentle sun in humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains freely. It suits woodland gardens, naturalised borders and wild areas, but root suckers may travel quickly in loose soil. Divide established colonies when needed and remove unwanted shoots to keep the patch within its allotted space.
