Description
Bright pink whorled blooms make Monarda didyma Balbalmink a lively compact accent for the front of a summer border or a patio container. The upright clump reaches about 8 to 12 inches tall, with aromatic dark green leaves and purple-flushed bracts around the flowers.
Grow it in full sun or partial shade in fertile, humus-rich soil that remains moist but drains well. Water through summer before the root zone dries out, avoid excessive winter wet, and provide good air movement. The flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and also suit cutting.
Deadhead spent flowers to encourage more blooms. Cut stems to the ground in autumn, and divide crowded clumps in early spring about every three years.
