Description
Strong upright stems carry stately spikes of semi-double, very deep purple-blue flowers with dark centers above divided green foliage. Delphinium Pagan Purples adds dramatic height to flowering borders, cottage gardens, and cutting gardens, while its flowers attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
Plant it in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, with shelter from strong wind. Stake the tall spikes before they become top-heavy, water consistently without leaving the crown soggy, and enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure.
Cut spent spikes back to flowering side shoots after the first flush to encourage later flowers. At the end of the growing season, cut all stems to ground level. The plant is toxic if eaten and may irritate skin, so wear gloves when handling it.
